(If you say it loud enough, you’ll always sound precocious)

I have been reliably informed that this is pronounced “Soo-pair-gah”. It’s named after the place in Italy. Near Turin. When I say ‘reliably informed’ I mean, I Googled it…Oh, Google, how did I ever live without you? …Without you I’d have to read books and memorise things and accept questions about 80s children’s TV just couldn’t be settled… (What was that show that was like Thunderbirds but with flying robot balls? Terrahawks. Google says so. Phew, now I can get on with my day.) Anyway, I digress. My point is, I’ve heard lots of people pronounce it in different ways, “Syoo-purr-jar”, “Super-gay”, “Super G.A.”, etc. But now I know the correct pronunciation I can rest easy and so can you.

From this little opener you’re probably guessing that I know very little about Superga. You’re right, I’d never heard of them until fairly recently. I saw them, thought they were great looking shoes and assumed they were a new thing. (Clearly, if I’ve never heard of them they must be new!!) Apparently though they’ve been around for nearly a hundred years and are “Long a favourite for taking Italians from the city to the beach on weekends”. Fantastico.

A possible reason for this new discovery for me is that Superga have recently had a major celebrity injection with the likes of fashionista Alexa Chung both modelling for and becoming creative director of the company…and looking enviably laid-back whilst doing so. And I suppose while I’m throwing in the names, the Olsen twins have designed a range for this spring/summer and other glam ladies such as Sienna Miller, Liv Tyler and Fearne Cotton have been spotted wearing these classic shoes.

Don’t worry though – if you thought this was all sounding a bit girly, never fear boys, the manliest of men are also sporting superb Superga! Only last month England Captain Scott Parker was photographed for FHM wearing a pair (Useless fact: Scott Parker and I share the same birthday. Ha! Best chat up line ever huh?! Sadly, this would probably be my opening gambit if ever I were to meet him. I know, I’m just the epitome of cool) and lad-flick director Guy Ritchie has also been snapped looking rather dapper in a pair of black 2750s.

England Captain Scott Parker for FHM

But, whether you think these people are to be reviled or revered, what they’ve got on their feet speaks for themselves. The Superga 2750 Cotu Classic is…classic and…dare I say it?…A must-have this season…there, said it! They come in a range of brilliant colours and sizes for both guys and girls (sizes 3-12). So, all you ladies who thought we had nothing in our wonderful Chichester StreetFeet store but men’s shoes, come and have a look at our selection of Superga, pop a pair on your feet and you’ll instantly feel like grabbing a cornetto and sauntering down to the beach (weather-permitting).

The perfect partners

So, I can tell you’re dying to hear what I’ve learned about trainers this week but before I start gabbing on I just need to light some incense and play some Japanese-pipe music to set the tone and then I’ll be right with you. There. So, I’m going to tell you about Asics Onitsuka Tigers. It’s a bit of a long tongue-twister of a title really, (and that’s before you’ve even got to the style name of the shoe) but it’s all important stuff though:

Asics: An acronym for ‘Anima Sana a In Corpore Sano’ which, for those of you whose Latin is a bit rusty means, ‘A sound mind in a sound body’. Deep, huh? So, in wearing Asics Tigers you’re helping balance your mind and body – who knew it was that simple?!

Onitsuka: The man who incorporated this philosophy into making trainers – Mr Onitsuka of Kobe, Japan who founded the company in 1949. He believed that sports were the best way of educating the young intellectually, morally and physically and that he could best help achieve this by making training shoes.

Tiger: Obvious really – The distinctive trademark stripes down the sides of the shoe. Plus, it’s a really cool name. Tigers are cool. No-one would wear trainers if they were called ‘Asics Hamsters’ now would they? Saying that, I probably would…they’d have little pouches in the sides that I could store Cadbury’s creme eggs in. I must write to Asics and tell them my idea.

Asics Onitsuka Tiger Fabre - Red/White

Anyway, this range of Tigers echo Mr Onitsuka’s early designs which carried a multitude of world-class athletes to victory. The Asics Tiger Fabre in red and white are reminiscent of the shoes runner Derek Clayton wore in 1967 when he became the first man to run the marathon in under 2hrs 10mins.

Derek Clayton with the trophy he won for his first world record in 1967 and the red running shoes he wore. Picture: Paul Trezise. Source: The Daily Telegraph

Or how about the now iconic Asics Tiger Mexico 66 in yellow and black as worn by Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino’s fantastically bloody film, Kill Bill? Hm…suddenly it’s not looking like wearing these shoes is so zen…she does kick a considerable amount of ass in that film though and I think the trainers are mainly responsible.

"Wiggle your big toe..." - Asics Tiger Mexico 66 - Black/Yellow

However, if marathon running and voyages of revenge aren’t your thing then there is still the more understated Asics Tiger Kohaku. No tiger stripes here. There is a picture of a tiger on the side though in case you feel left out…I can’t work out if he’s roaring or yawning though…

Rooooar....yawn... - Asics Tiger Kohaku - Grey suede

Whichever you decide is more you, come to our lovely StreetFeet store in Chichester* and try some on and see how sound of mind and body you feel with a pair on your feet.

Go on, try a pair of Tigers – they’re grrrrrrrrrrrreat! [groan]

(*No Samurai swords allowed.)

Only skaters wear Vans. At least that’s what I thought until very recently. Vans have been around since 1966 and whilst I haven’t and never skated myself (I don’t think even magic shoes could keep me on a board) have been used to seeing a pair of Vans whizz past me on the feet of an uber-cool skater atop a battered deck for as long as I can remember. Vans came about when the Van Doren Rubber Company of California decided to manufacture shoes to sell directly to public – the first style of shoe they produced are now their signature style known as Authentic.

Vans Authentic - True White. (Warning: do not look directly at them without wearing sunglasses)

In the 1970s Vans became the skater shoe of choice due to their ‘superior board-feel and grip’ (sound like I know anything about skating yet?) and soon after that they were the first company to design shoes especially for skating, developing the style we now called Era.

Vans Era Herringbone - Desert Palm/Cornsilk

So, I guess that it wasn’t an entirely stupid assumption to make…they were originally made for skaters. However, from spending time in our glorious StreetFeet store in Chichester, I’ve come to realise that it’s not just springy skateboarders who love these shoes. Why? Because not only are they designed for performance they are an extremely good-looking shoe that can be worn anywhere – dressed up or dressed down. I’m seeing the classic Era (the ‘Gingerbread‘ is a personal favourite), Madero and Authentic catch the eye of so many different people and love seeing how Vans adapt to each person’s individual style. So, we’ve got a great selection in store and online so have a look and judge for yourself. As for me, I shall be donning a pair of Old Skool and taking myself down the skatepark to practise my ollies, nollies, kickflips and liptricks…ok, ok you got me…slippers and cuppa it is.

Vans Era Gingerbtead - good enough to eat.

So, here we are – it’s been a week since our new store opened in Chichester and the response has been terrific. So many of you have popped in to wish us well, tell us how how nice you think the shop looks and compliment us on our great selection of shoes. It’s true, we do sell great shoes. We have, amongst other labels, a really interesting range of Adidas, Diesel, Puma and Vans that you won’t find in most of the other local stores. Also, at StreetFeet you have the added bonus of not having to wade through piles of shoes and boxes to find a style you like followed by the trauma of finding a place to perch in order to avoid toppling over as you attempt to try on a shoe whilst standing on one leg…basically, it’s lovely in here – it’s spacious and uncluttered and shows these fantastic shoes off to their best.

Our shiny new shop

So, huge thank yous to those of you who have come to see us already and as for those of you who haven’t…I cant imagine why?! Perhaps you’ve been on holiday for the past week? Perhaps you live on the other side of the world and are booking your flight here as we speak? Perhaps it’s because you don’t have the right footwear for the walk down? If this is the case we can help you out so you never have to worry about your feet not being impeccably dressed ever again. Most likely it’s because you don’t know where we are so I’ll help you out.
