(If you say it loud enough, you’ll always sound precocious)
I have been reliably informed that this is pronounced “Soo-pair-gah”. It’s named after the place in Italy. Near Turin. When I say ‘reliably informed’ I mean, I Googled it…Oh, Google, how did I ever live without you? …Without you I’d have to read books and memorise things and accept questions about 80s children’s TV just couldn’t be settled… (What was that show that was like Thunderbirds but with flying robot balls? Terrahawks. Google says so. Phew, now I can get on with my day.) Anyway, I digress. My point is, I’ve heard lots of people pronounce it in different ways, “Syoo-purr-jar”, “Super-gay”, “Super G.A.”, etc. But now I know the correct pronunciation I can rest easy and so can you.
From this little opener you’re probably guessing that I know very little about Superga. You’re right, I’d never heard of them until fairly recently. I saw them, thought they were great looking shoes and assumed they were a new thing. (Clearly, if I’ve never heard of them they must be new!!) Apparently though they’ve been around for nearly a hundred years and are “Long a favourite for taking Italians from the city to the beach on weekends”. Fantastico.
A possible reason for this new discovery for me is that Superga have recently had a major celebrity injection with the likes of fashionista Alexa Chung both modelling for and becoming creative director of the company…and looking enviably laid-back whilst doing so. And I suppose while I’m throwing in the names, the Olsen twins have designed a range for this spring/summer and other glam ladies such as Sienna Miller, Liv Tyler and Fearne Cotton have been spotted wearing these classic shoes.

Don’t worry though – if you thought this was all sounding a bit girly, never fear boys, the manliest of men are also sporting superb Superga! Only last month England Captain Scott Parker was photographed for FHM wearing a pair (Useless fact: Scott Parker and I share the same birthday. Ha! Best chat up line ever huh?! Sadly, this would probably be my opening gambit if ever I were to meet him. I know, I’m just the epitome of cool) and lad-flick director Guy Ritchie has also been snapped looking rather dapper in a pair of black 2750s.
But, whether you think these people are to be reviled or revered, what they’ve got on their feet speaks for themselves. The Superga 2750 Cotu Classic is…classic and…dare I say it?…A must-have this season…there, said it! They come in a range of brilliant colours and sizes for both guys and girls (sizes 3-12). So, all you ladies who thought we had nothing in our wonderful Chichester StreetFeet store but men’s shoes, come and have a look at our selection of Superga, pop a pair on your feet and you’ll instantly feel like grabbing a cornetto and sauntering down to the beach (weather-permitting).
Bellissimo.
